“Boooom…tat…tat tat…tat.” A deep tremor of bass pours out of the large overhead speakers; rattling the stage, followed by a rhythmic “tatting” sound much like that of a snare drum. The sequence continues for three repetitions, then the bass quiets and the lyrics are spoken slowly in a low tone, “I want the money, money and the cars, cars and the clothes… the hoes, I suppose.”
The lyricist is Drake and the music is exceptional in its genre.
What’s so extraordinary about this particular rapper? From the intro one may suspect that Drake, like his stereotypical peers in the industry, solely rhymes about the “hood” and the luxuries of being a “gangsta”. However, when you listen further, he actually questions what it means to be urban and well off. The following verse of the song reads “I just want to be successful”, although he seems confused about what success means to a young black man. The overpowering bass and slow tempo encourages the audience to “vibe” with him as he reveals his internal struggles. Later, in the same song, he describes a scene where he catches his mother in the driveway in her attempts to desert him and sequentially acknowledges the love that he has for his girlfriend. However, he decides to succumb to the “fuckit” attitude of the streets and gives into life on the road without her.
Drake, formerly known as Aubrey Drake Graham, is a Canadian born actor and lyricist. Before his rap debut, he was known as Jimmy Brooks from the television series Degrassi. He found his first success in the music industry through his first mixtape Room For Improvement in 2006. On February 13, 2009 Drake released his third and most popular mixtape So Far Gone on his blog site for free download. His hit songs from the mixtape, “Successful” and “Best I Ever Had”, created a major buzz and earned him radio play across the country.
Drake’s new to the scene; however fans and critics alike agree that he has the potential to make a lasting impact on the rap game. This is because he hasn’t tried to “over-image” himself. Unlike his counterpart rapper Lil Wayne, you won’t find Drake parading himself on stage like a circus act; flaunting oversized medallions draped from an overly tatted body, while consumed by the color red. No, he leaves the stage antics to those fame thirsty, egotistical monsters like Kanye West and Irv Gotti. Drake fans can expect to see an average guy onstage when attending his concert. He may wear a leather jacket and a nice pair of shades, however his appearance won’t distract you from the real reason you showed up (the music!).
Drake’s music ranges from upbeat club bangers to slow R&B jams. His song “Sooner or Later” is a slow ballad that evokes emotion as he questions his timing in regards to his last relationship; practically begging as he repeatedly asks, “Did you sleep in his bed on the very first date, tell me baby am I too late?” Regardless of the song, you can expect a superior beat and lyrics that are easily relatable.
Drake is currently a member of Young Money Entertainment and his first official album Thank Me Later is scheduled to drop in late 2009.
